Shouldn't this all be common sense? Or at least the basic rules of writing. I know e-mail is somewhat less formal than sending paper, but I think that's only because we treat it so.

Simply put, there are too many lawyers out there. And I think many students head to law school expecting to be making a killing as an attorney after they graduate, but that's not actually the case.

I am actually an author of one of the blogs, i.e. "Third Tier Reality," cited in Sloan's article. Even Professor Herwig Schlunk of Vanderbilt University Law School concludes that law school is a bad investment for most. His paper is entitled, "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Lawyers." It is a quick and informative read.

Check out the stats and figures (from the ABA itself), on this blog entry:

http://temporaryattorney.blogspot.com/2010/02/carolyn-lamm-and-aba-are-looking-into.html

Not quite the rosy picture provided by the law schools, in their shiny marketing brochures and DVDs, is it?

This doesn't affect just young lawyers. Even people just completing their undergraduate work are graduating with mountains of debt that they have very little opportunity to repay. And we still keep telling people that they MUST go to college. But how can they do that if they cannot pay for it?

Chris: He illustrates eleven practice areas of which biotech law constitutes only one part. Given, that pay on cases only and virtual offices have been tried before, perhaps it's now time in the business evolutionary cycle for them to work? If you're involved in biotech (or would like to be involved) I have an e-book on funding new technology companies and an extensive white paper on technology transfer in the life sciences, both gratis at tarrows@verison.net, if you want. The e-book is "When Venture Capitalists Say 'No'--Creative Financing Strategies & Resources" and the white paper is as named. best,

Of all the innovative things he's trying, the one I think is the riskiest is the intense focus on one industry. The other areas -- different pay structure, virtual offices -- have been tried before and there are already best practices. I wonder, though, if the niche focus will broaden if he gets established and wants to continue expanding. As the story mentions, other "biotech" law firms also do cleantech and other industries.

Actually, unless you really have a love of law and are passionate about becoming a lawyer, I wouldn't recommend law school right now, either. So many firms are downsizing it's scary. I think too many people in the last decade or two looked at becoming a lawyer as a surefire way to make money and didn't particularly care about the job they would actually be doing.

I cannot believe the buzz my post has generated at http://www.hluizpresents.com

It was meant to be tongue-and-cheek (I would never really sell my child) with a humorus tone. I am NOT encouraging people NOT to attend Law School, but I want them to know that it is NOT an easy road. My post was compiled of personal research, online stats, law-student friends, employers (lawyers), some Law Professors, and some stat-guru friends.

My subscribers and friends had a notion that Law School is easy and all Lawyers ended up looking (and capitalizing) like the pretty people lawyers of TV & Movies. That's why I wrote the post.

Very best regards,
H. Luiz

What an embarassment that Cuban is allowed to speak without a lawyer present, or at least someone who would have the balls to tell him when to shut up.
But what do you expect from someone who socializes with his stockbroker?

Cuban is an imbecile. He got lucky with the Internet Bubble and has been an unmitigated failure ever sense. He over spent on the Mevericks in a reckless fashion and did not get an NBA Title out of it. Now the chickens have come home to roost. The Mavericks are a disaster on and off the court. I would expect that you will see a tsunami of lawsuits coming after Cuban. He may have dodged the SEC bullet, but everyone knows he is unethical.

Are they joking? This is criminally cruel of them. He has to find some work if he ever hopes to pay his student loans back. And it most likely has to be a higher-paying job such as being a lawyer. He certainly couldn't pay that much back on a janitor's salary.

Student loans have gone too far.
They should be limited to fields of relevance....math, science, education and medical.
Also no foreignors or illegals should get them.
Get rid of about half the college instructors and require the others to put in an actual work week.
College has become a big joke.....and taxpayers are picking up the bill.
Our educational system as a whole is doing nothing but "dumbing down" our children!

Same here Joe. I created a personal account and an account for the blog today but I have no idea when I will ever use them. Twitter seems a bit redundant to me since it is essentially the same as a Facebook status update but it seems to be catching on more than I thought it would.

What is this the hicks? Why do people care that there are too many law schools? Keep in mind that the laws schools down here many miles apart. Is there a plan to keep only a certain percentage of people without a JD? A new school regardless is a great thing. For the people who think that there are too many lawers, Are you serious? So people willing to be legally educated is a bad thing? Boston, Mass has multiple Law schools just within T stops of each other. Also consider Boston, Mass is the Mecca of Education (MIT, Harvard, BU, BC, Tufts, Northeastern.

Stupid is having 3 private schools...and no public universities. As far as devalue of a JD. Well as far as I am concerned the more competition the more a lawyer will study and work to be a value to his/her clients. There are professionals here in D/FW that need an affordable law school. It is not easy to uproot a family and move to Lubbock or Austin as those areas do not come close to the business climate the DFW area possesses.

By the way the more lawyers we have to more cost effective to small business and families.

Good grief, this is exactly what we need; something to even further dillute the value of a JD. So, we'll have three law schools all within 30 miles of each other in DFW. Awesome. Stupid.

There are already too many law schools and the demand of "academic" jobs will be about 30 whereas this school will churn out about 300 new lawyers a year. In a country where our population is aging and we have a lack of health care options, it is a little curious why they don't open up another medical school, perhaps because the AMA has figured some things out about supply and demand that the ABA has not.

Whoa, now hold on there pardner.

Remember that it'll be a while before the school gets going and then after that, it'll be another three years before it can start turning out baby lawyers.

The odds are quite good that the economy will do a 180 before then.

Of course, the economy could also do a 360, or do nothing.

In any case, if the worst-case scenario happens - just think of all the new unemployed lawyers we'll get to feel sorry for! Pity party rockin' the hizzouse!

Also, keep in mind that a law school means that they'll have to go hire a lot more law professors. And the law professors that we already have will be tempted with bigger salaries. So this ought to improve the market in academic law, more or less immediately, by raising "demand," long before there is any new "supply" of lawyers.

"A far more troubling problem is that most of the attorneys doing the document review often wonder if their services are even necessary."

Doc review is discovery, and therefore necessary. It may at times be mundane, but it is part fo the practice of law, and despite what some people think, an important part. The only reason lawyers think it is not "necessary" is because they demean the work so much.

Shoot, the Howrey law firm almost found themselves in major trouble when they missed two highly relevant docs in a case a while back.
